sg-ntu-dr.10356-358352020-11-01T08:25:09Z Democratisation in Indonesia : will it pose a challenge to Asean? Mgr Maran Paramanathan. Leonard Christopher Sebastian S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies DRNTU::Social sciences::Political science::Political institutions::Asia 42 p. The democratic experiment in Indonesia is not a new phenomenon. The first democratic elections were held in 1955 but the democratic experiment was soon dismantled with implementation of Sukarno's guided democracy, and distanced by Suharto's New Order. However, the recent democratization process that had taken off following the fall of Suharto in 1998 had put Indonesia in a more stable trajectory. The process of democratization will not be an easy path to success as contemporary trends of democratic transition have shown. Apart from its effects on the domestic politics, democratization in Indonesia will also alter the way Indonesia participates in ASEAN. Indonesia, with the recent democratic orientation in its foreign policy particularly within ASEAN, is expected to exert pressures on ASEAN. Alternatively, democratizing Indonesia may be a catalyst for changes in ASEAN.
