Rajaratnam School of International Studies DRNTU::Humanities::Religions::Islam 49 p. Contemporary democratic and modern Islamic thoughts have been gaining much importance and momentum in the international political arena since the beginning of the 20th century. Whilst both democracy and Islam discourse has been around for a long time, the two had never 'clashed' so vigorously as it does now. Notwithstanding, it was probably with the events of 9/11 in the United States, that most certainly put Islam, as well as democracy, on the pedestal. Nevertheless, unlike certain political theories, Islam cannot be measured within a state-centric structure. To many Muslims, Islam transcends beyond the state. It is also more than a religion and it is as diverse as any other civilisation. My research attempts to ask whether political Islam is compatible to the basic values and doctrines of democracy. And hence, in this thesis, I will be looking at the compatibility of democracy and political Islam. I will also briefly define democracy and political Islam in Southeast Asia.
