This dissertation seeks to examine whether ongoing counterinsurgency measures in Southern Thailand have addressed the grievances stemming from the reported root causes of unrests. If not, then what other imperative factors could be considered. These justify an evaluation on the extent such measures have progressed in stamping out such grievances. To this end, the dissertation argues for a reappraisal of existing counterinsurgency approaches, since the factors that influence success in counterinsurgency are multifaceted and inter-related in a manner that spans across the continuum of political, social, and economical fabric of society. The belief that the government must have a clear political aim and an overall plan in accordance with established law, with priority in defeating insurgents' political subversion and securing of base areas, demands a holistic counterinsurgency plan.
