sg-ntu-dr.10356-358702020-11-01T08:29:54Z Emergence of liberal Islam Afif Pasuni S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies DRNTU::Humanities::Religions::Islam 40 p. Southeast Asian Muslim societies have seen the emergence of entities which promote a liberal-secular version of Islamic values, identified as Liberal Islam. The major difference between the mainstream Sunni understanding of religious interpretation and Liberal Islamic view surrounds the issue of ijtihad. The expansion of Liberal Islam's ideology in Southeast Asia, combined with the current world situation and conditions makes it appear more prominent against the Centrists in the "fight against terror". The rise of Liberal Muslim ideologues post- 9/1 1 gives a rationale for some of the factors assisting their popularity and support. Other contributing factors include the demand for an antithesis to extremism, and the spread of secularism and liberalism through globalization. Examples of Liberal Islamic ideas are illustrated through organizations such as Liberal Islam Network (JIL) and Sisters in Islam (SIS), based in Indonesia and Malaysia respectively. Overall, Liberal Islam tends to neglect the mainstream Sunni positions on Islamic rulings, resulting in its difficulty gaining acceptance by Muslims.
