The concept of democracy promotion as it is used in American policy making and academic discourse is analysed in this paper. The paper seeks to show that the USA has historically tried to portray itself as a nation concerned about idealistic motives such as democracy promotion. But the policies it actually follows are grounded in much more pragmatic considerations. The paper seeks to prove that the USA has always given priority to strategic, realist considerations in its foreign policy and the rhetoric of idealism it uses to mask these motives is nothing more than a myth which makes it easier to justify them in front of its domestic populace. It also seeks to highlight the glaring contradictions in the United States's "idealistic" policies through three case studies.
