Increasingly, Chengdu is establishing itself as a major manufacturing hub in central China. This is evident from the foreign direct investments from product companies in setting up manufacturing facilities in the city. To fuel this growth, Chengdu has also started to focus on attracting industries that provide the raw materials like petrochemicals for these manufacturers. The creation of petrochemical hubs in the interior beyond the coastal regions is imminent with the recent announcement by PetroChina to build an 800,000 ton per year ethylene plant in Chengdu in December 2005.
