Ultrafine grained ceramic components, which are normally obtained by sintering nano-sized powder, possess excellent mechanical properties. Homogeneous submicron and nano-scaled micro structure have been formed to greatly improve the strength and ductility of ceramic components. However, it is very difficulty to fully densify the nano-sized ceramic powder compact by sintering while maintaining its nanostructure. Defects, such as pores, micro cracks and stress concentrations, easily occur during densification. To produce high quality submicron and nano structural ceramic components, advanced processing techniques are required. A full understanding of material intrinsic sintering behavior is thus necessary.
