sg-ntu-dr.10356-359692023-03-04T16:38:11Z Design, characterization and reliability studies of passive aligned optical modules Anish Priyadarshi Kripesh Vaidyanathan Subodh Gautam Mhaisalkar School of Materials Science & Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Materials::Photonics and optoelectronics materials 145 p. Optical communication is one of the most promising areas of research in the field of micro and optoelectronics, largely due to the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth. Cost effective solutions and reliability of the optical devices are the key challenges in adopting the optical framework on the local area network (LAN). Since optical ICs are not fully developed, assembly of different optical components on a common platform is the only viable solution. Passive alignment technology and polymer materials are emerging as cost effective solutions for optical modules. This research thesis deals with the assembly of single mode optical transceiver modules using polymeric materials employing the passive alignment methodology and investigating its reliability. The objective of this research was to develop methodologies to characterize, simulate, and predict the effect of packaging design, material properties, and thermo-mechanical induced stresses on the optical coupling efficiency of the transceiver module.
