Sridhar Idapalapati School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Materials::Composite materials 107 p. Aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) have been widely studied since the 1920s and are a popular metal matrix composite due to their high specific strength, stiffness and improved toughness and creep properties. Aluminum alloys are attractive as they possess low density with good corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity. The properties of AMCs can also be modified to meet the demands of different industrial applications by suitable combinations of matrix, reinforcement and processing route. This report is aimed to study the effect of adding carbon fiber and/or carbon nanotubes as reinforcement to the Aluminum oxide composites by using spark plasma sintering method. And another one is Al matrix composite by using hot compaction method. Surface treatment of carbon fibers and CNTs are undertaken first before mixing them with aluminum powder or aluminum oxide. They are then consolidated using spark plasma sintering and hot compaction method to either produce CF/A1 composites or CNTs/Al or CNTs/ AI2O3 composites Master of Science (Mechanical Engineering) 2010-04-23T02:21:49Z 2010-04-23T02:21:49Z 2007 2007 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10356/35983 application/pdf
