Sam Zhang Shanyong School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Materials::Nanostructured materials 79 p. Hydrogen has been identified as the best alternative to fossil fuels, however the major problem which has hindered the wide spread use of hydrogen as a fuel for vehicular application is its storage. Hydrogen fuel can be stored in pressurized gas containers, in metal hydrides or as a liquid in cryogenic containers but the technical challenges and high costs associated with these storage methods must be solved before the dream of a hydrogen economy can be realized. This report presents the results of a research project undertaken to synthesize and characterize a number of novel nanostructured materials that can be used for onboard hydrogen fuel storage. Synthesis of many materials was attempted, of all the materials explored; Calcium, magnesium and Zinc borohydrides were successfully synthesized using wet chemical synthesis. The synthesized materials were subjected to advanced characterization to determine their hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics. The result of these analyses reveals that Zinc borohydride has very good potentials to be used for onboard hydrogen storage having satisfied some of the requirements for solid state hydrogen storage material as stipulated in the United States department of Energy (DOE) requirements for onboard solid state hydrogen storage materials.
