Fuss Franz Konstantin School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Bioengineering 82 p. Total knee replacement (TKR) or Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a surgical procedure which replaces a severely degenerated knee joint with a prosthesis knee joint. Knee joints wear out for many reasons. Some of which, are damages caused by progressive arthritis, trauma, or other rare destructive diseases of the joint. The most common reason for knee replacement in the United stated is severe osteoarthritis of the knees. Klein et al. (2003) estimated that clinically significant osteoarthritis of the knee currently affects 5 percent to 10 percent of people over 60 years of age. American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has projected that, each year approximately 300,000 TKR surgeries are performed in the United States for end-stage arthritis of the knee joint. The number of patients who will seek treatment for knee joint pain and disability due to knee arthritis will, without doubt, continue to rise due to an increase in life expectancy and an increasingly active population. These patients have higher functional demands and activity levels, which often exceed what the current TKR design can offer.
