sg-ntu-dr.10356-360902023-03-11T17:00:32Z Measurement of magnetic hard disk surfaces by atomic force microscopy with fractal analysis Anne Sasikanth Wang Shao School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Manufacturing::Product engineering 152 p. Nowadays, most of the researchers are looking into the NanoTribology aspects because, ignorance of surface roughness effects in different fields of nano-engineering, lead to great losses. The purpose of project is to obtain good surface characterization of hard disks in storage devices. Surface characterization was to quantitatively describe surface roughness of hard disk surfaces with a fractal-regular analysis. Nano-scale measurements by atomic force microscopy are able to reveal influence of the under lying molecular-level processes.AFM measurements and subsequent fractal analysis approach are used to obtain three- dimensional surface profiles with a fractal dimension, D, and a fractal roughness parameter, G. Surface roughness is known to play an important role in the application of AFM to tribology, including measurement of the roughness of hard disks having coating of nanometer or even monolayer thickness. Fractal Analysis of tribological performance of the head-disk interface will have significant impact on the performance and durability of the hard disk drive. Good characterization can allow the including to produce good surface finish resulting in minimization and elimination of losses due to friction and wear. It leads to greater efficiency, better performance, fewer breakdowns, and significant savings. Engineering surfaces investigated were magnetic disks used in the formation storage industry.
