In order to meet the requirement of the developed science and technology, a special type of gripping device that is powerful and small in size has to be developed. The motivation of this dissertation is the development of a special type of gripping device. Three types of compact gripping devices are designed and shape memory alloy (SMA) wire is used as an actuator in stead of the traditional one (i.e. motor). All of them are compact and small in size. One type of gripping device is manufactured and a group of tests are performed to measure the properties of the special type of gripper.
