This paper examines the changes of the past 25 years in the Chinese media industry as a result of the restructuring of the media system, and discusses how the next stage of the industry's development will play out. Although the two stages of restructuring were taken under the control of the Chinese government, this paper argues there are various powers (include Market and Government) that have led to the recent restructuring of the Chinese media system, and that the current developing situation is the result of the interplay of complex forces. China's accession to the World Trade Organization has significantly accelerated the country's integration with global capitalism through its bureaucratically-controlled and market-driven communication industries, providing China's media new opportunities and challenges.
