Zhang Zhibin School of Humanities and Social Sciences DRNTU::Humanities::History::Asia::China 111 p. Research Background : On 27 May 1949, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) entered Shanghai. Then two thousand three hundreds and thirty-four left-wing students from Shanghai universities joined PLA to form the PLA East-China Service Corps. The Corps went with the military on the southern expedition to Fujian province, where all the students were assigned to work for the newly formed provincial government of Fujian. The students came from the generation who grew up under huge influence of May Fourth Intellectuals and studied at universities with curricula emphasized Western learning. They were sons and daughters of the KMT establishhient but most of them became ardent supporters of the CCP. The research is to investigate what has happened to this group of Chinese young intellectuals under Mao's regime from 1949 to 1979.
