In his lifetime, O‟Nolan addressed many issues through his writing that often left critics criticizing and his readers unable to make sense of his work. He experimented with his writing, and pushed the boundaries of being an author to such an extent that vanity and insecurity became his notable traits. Such traits are paralleled by the court jester who was given the permission to “say whatever came into his head” at the risk of losing his life (Otto). Using the metaphor of the court jester, my final year project will examine the vanity and insecurity of Brian O‟Nolan the court jester of Ireland.
