This thesis tracks the implications which the different settings - Wuthering Heights, and Thrushcross Grange, have on the Catherine-Heathcliff relationship. Thrushcross Grange emphasizes society's rejection of Heathcliff which ends the development of the Heathcliff-Catherine relationship. The theme of "Romance" is placed within a limitless reality of the inhuman energies. It is the presence of the absence of boundaries placed on the characters of Catherine and Heathcliff which enable Wuthering Heights to achieve a greatness which sets it apart from nineteenth-century fiction and give the characters a timeless structure. The greatness of the Catherine-Heathcliff relationship is only able to thrive independently, away from the restrictive reality of civilising society. The conscious choices which Catherine makes to enter the restrictive reality of civilising British society, places Wuthering Heights as a novel conscious of the society within nineteenth-century literature.
