This is made even worse if it happens in a long tunnel. In this report, statistical analysis will be done to highlight any peculiar characteristics of the profile of traffic incidents that happen along the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE). Traffic incident data of the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway was obtained from Land Transport Authority There has being an increasing trend of incident rate since the start of the operation of the tunnel. The peak hour counts for the tunnel is from 0800 hrs to 1000 hrs for South Bound going towards East Coast Parkway (ECP), and 1900 hrs to 2100hrs for North Bound going towards Tampines Expressway (TPE). The ratio of accident counts to total incident counts is about 13% (average of 2 months) which is very low compared to the other expressways in Singapore. Pearson’s Product-moment correlation coefficient and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient were used to determine the relationship between traffic counts and incident rates. It was then observed that there is weak to moderate positive correlation between the two variables. There are many reasons that could cause an incident like flat tire and mechanical fault. However there is no particular types of vehicle that are prone to an incident and there is an equal chance of any types of vehicle to be involved in an incident. Surveillance camera was seen as the most effective source in detecting an incident as it was placed strategically along the tunnel.
