Broadband wireless communication networks will be an important part of the global communication infrastructure in the future. With the growing deployment of wireless data services and the increasing demand for multimedia applications, it is highly expected that future wireless networks will provide services for heterogeneous classes of traffic, and satisfy their different quality of service (QoS) requirements. Thus the importance of traffic control mechanisms to support QoS for future multi-service wireless network becomes apparent. Because of the unique characteristics of wireless channel, such as location dependent channel error and time varying channel states, the problems faced by future wireless traffic control mechanisms are greatly different from traditional wireline networks and much more challenging. In this Ph.D research project, we address some key issues in traffic control including packet scheduling, admission control and congestion control mechanisms for multi-service wireless networks.
