Due to the rapid growth of radio-frequency wireless communication, the conventional radio-frequency spectrum is mostly occupied by radionavigation, television, radio broadcasting, mobile services and satellite transmission etc. Therefore, the demand for bandwidtii is very high. This resulted in the replacement of satellite- and land-based microwave systems by optical fiber systems which do not require the subscription of bandwidth as signals are transmitted as light within the fiber.
