The soil properties and composition of soil are a reflection of their geology and mechanical effects that operated on them in the past. A buried explosion in soil usually results in a single, prominent pulse in the time-history record that lasts a very short duration (typically 0.02 seconds), and is sometimes referred to as a transient dynamic loading. Assessment of shock wave propagation in soils is of great importance to engineers, as they dictate the magnitude of load that will impinge on structures for a given source, and thus determine the basis for structural design.
