Summary:Rainfall induced slope failure is prevalent in tropical countries for instance, Singapore where land space is limited and structures are built on high ground. When such an accident occurs, the public sector suffers financial and time-consuming damages. Hence it is important and necessary to device a protective cover to prevent episodes of landslides. A capillary barrier is a precautionary dual layer placed on the surface of a slope. It consists of a fine-grained layer on top of a coarse-grained layer. Infiltration or excess moisture will be trapped in the first layer where permeability is low. Water will then be lost through basic mechanisms such as evaporation and transpiration. It could also be drained laterally into a catchment area. In this project, we will understand the soil water characteristic curves of different types of materials, specifically recycled materials. Recycled materials have become a more popular choice of input in conjunction with creating a green environment. The report will cover and discuss characteristics of copper slag, crushed concrete chips and lastly asphalt chips.
