N3.1-B2-01, the Material Lab 1 of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is the venue where the student conducted all the experiments related to this project. The purpose of this report is to give the reader an overview of this FYP. This project is an enhancement to the previous project, Standard Static Tensile, Compression and Torsion Tests done by Teng Chen Yuen. Static tensile testing is a very common technique used to measure the ultimate tensile strength and the INSTRON machine is able to manage a crosshead speed of 0-510mm/min. The static tensile test is based on the force applied on the specimen per unit area as measured by the load cell and the strain by extensometer. The objective of the project is to ensure the INSTRON 5500R machine accuracy and reliability in testing for other materials. In order to achieve that, the student has to calibrate the tensile machine with standard Aluminum alloy specimen AL6061-T6 and comparing the calibration results with the past research results. The project will also look into the causes and solution of the problems faced during the experiment. Several recommendations for the static tensile test will be discussed in order to improve the accuracy and reliability of the static tensile test.
