Summary:In traction system, power quality comes to the biggest concern due to severe harmonic and reactive power problems. Traditionally, train drives have been realized by thyristor-based converters, which produce a lot of harmonic and reactive. New modern traction drives are likely to apply converters based on fully controlled devices, such as IGBT. To improve power quality, reactive power compensator such as STATCOM and active power filter are both equipped to eliminate reactive and harmonic concerns. This report firstly reviews converter technology applied in modern traction system. Then, simulation of multilevel DC-AC inverter, single phase NPC rectifier and active power filter was conducted. Active power filter can largely improve power quality.
