Summary: | The importance of China Three Gorges Dam is increasing with the increasing population and usage of the dam water. Hence, maintaining the quality of this resource is vital to users’ health. Unfortunately, untreated wastewater from rural villages has been carelessly discharged to the tributary river of Three Gorges. Hence, a wastewater treatment system to reduce the pollution level of the river without changing the habit of the villagers was proposed. The system should be affordable, simple, and adaptable to implement in other rural village in China.
This report presents the reasoning for choosing wetland as a treatment method for the proposed site. Also, experimental data to justify this decision were gathered and compared with the Standard China effluent water quality Type V. The results concluded that after several years of plant establishment, the wetland could reduce the level of phosphorus and nitrogen to below the limit. Whereas for COD, a COD loading rate value was prescribed after the experiment to meet the standard limit for both the single and cluster household wetland. Although, problems were met during the experiment and discussion period, the project was eventually completed and met its objectives to design a wastewater treatment system that is affordable, simple to maintain and able to reduce pollution level to below standard. From this Final Year Project, design of wastewater treatment system for the rural village China (Jiaoyuan village) has been finalized. Once the financial resources are realised, construction of the project can begin, keeping in mind management issues and future monitoring by developer. This project itself could be further elaborated if time and resources permit. There is potential for new groups to commensurate this project with the same set of plants and system in order to gather more information.
This report only presented part of the whole project to design wastewater treatment. Since it is a seven members’ group, another four students from Harvey Mudd College would be presenting the part on blackwater treatment. Another part on power and hydro- energy from the village dam was assigned to another NTU student from the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. |
