3D modelling using digital camera

In this project, we were tasked to create a 3-dimensional (3-D) virtual model using digital camera and commercial photomodelling software. The primary aim of this project is to accurately create a 3-D virtual model of either natural or man-made structures. The secondary aim is to comment on the accu...

The primary aim of this project is to accurately create a 3-D virtual model of either natural or man-made structures. The secondary aim is to comment on the accuracy between the model and the real life dimensions. The model of choice was the Transportation Laboratory located at the North Spine within Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Both the interior and exterior of the laboratory would eventually be modeled. The 3-D model of the exterior of the laboratory was to be done by Chong Yeow Koon, the author’s Final Year Project partner. The author would be creating the 3-D model of the interior of the Transportation Laboratory. We would be using the Canon Ixus 70 and Canon EOS 500D to capture photographs. These photographs would then be uploaded into photo-modeling software, PhotoModeler 6.0 (PM6) to be processed. Comparisons would be made between the results obtained by the two different cameras and the reasons behind the difference would be highlighted. Results from the individual models would be compared to that of obtained from the Electronic Total Station and measuring tape. Recommendations and solutions would be suggested in the conclusion of the report. Some trial targets that were done included the Central Fire Station and the NTU North Spine 2 building.
