Description
Summary:Slope stability problems can be analyzed through a number of different methods. The two broad categories are Limit Equilibrium Methods (LEM) and Finite Element Method (FEM). Besides the methodology and output differences for these two categories, various limit equilibrium methods with different assumptions have also been of concern in slope stability problems. This project applies some commonly used limit equilibrium methods to case studies; comparisons between the outputs of these methods are illustrated and assumptions that cause deviations in outputs are identified. The FEM is also included for a comparison with the LEM. Of the four cases studies in this project, two are hypothetical. Computer programs Slide 5 and Excel spreadsheet are used to analyze these cases. Outputs between these two programs are compared in order to discover the modeling differences in the two computer programs. At the same time, Phase 2 is also used to generate SRF for FEM. The other two case studies are real cases in which guidelines of site investigations in slope failure analysis are provided. Slope failures due to surcharge and soil profile modifications are covered in these 2 cases; progressive failure is also discussed in this report. Besides the slope stability analysis, landslide prevention and remedial methods for enhancing slope stability are also covered in this project.
