For the hardware part, the student is required to setup a Ka-band beacon receiver. The process can be divided into before, during and after setting up. Before the actual setup, the equipments must be tested to be in working condition and the information for the satellite must be acquired. During the setup, an angle finder and engineer compass are used to locate the elevation angle and azimuth, in order to face the direction of the satellite. Once done, further fine-tuning is required to ensure the best signal strength. After the setup, constant maintenance is required to ensure that the beacon receiver is working properly. As for the software part, the main focus is to investigate the relationship between low-noise block gain and temperature. However, before doing so, some attenuation must be removed to isolate the factor of LNB gain. These include scintillation and gaseous absorption loss. Once removed, the investigation on LNB gain and temperature is done in various steps, which include scatter plot, cumulative distribution function and equi-probability graph.
