Description
Summary:The motivation to achieve greater energy efficiency is driven primarily by environmental problems such as global warming caused by burning fossil fuels, the rising price of crude oil and natural gas, and the political difficulties of oil dependence. Solar power and other alternative fuels have undisputed advantages in achieving a cleaner planet and "energy independence" for countries that produce less crude oil and natural gas than they consume. Replacing fossil fuel energy with alternative sources systems could have a tremendous affect on our global economy and well being. But there is a problem. Alternative energy sources need to produce electrical power at per-kilowatt prices equal to or less than fossil fuels to make a significant dent in oil consumption. In the development of solar power technologies, most attention has been focused on improving the efficiency of the photovoltaic cells themselves. But an important role can also be played in the design of the circuits that convert the dc power generated by the cells to a higher and more stable dc output. To compete with fossil-fuel-generated electricity costs, every additional percent of power efficiency designers can wring out of the inverter is critical. Manufacturers of solar power conversion systems have found that increasing the inverter's efficiency from and already excellent 92% to about 96% can make a significant difference in the success of the product in the marketplace.
