Research and development of optical filters for wavelength division multiplexing systems

Due to the advantages of low insertion loss, low polarization sensitivity, compactness, low cost, all-fiber geometry and ease of fabrication, fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have evolved into critically important optical filters for a wide variety of applications in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM)...

This thesis investigates the theoretical issues involved in the synthesis or design of optical filters based on FBGs as well as the experimental issues involved in the fabrication of optical filters based on chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs). In many system applications, it is critically important to find a grating with a desired complex reflection response (i.e. reflection spectrum and phase response). As such, this thesis studies various optimization methods for the development of a powerful and versatile methodology for the synthesis or design of FBG-based filters with complicated characteristics.
