Development and improvement of tensile Split Hopkinson pressure bars testing with sheet specimen

Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experimental testing method can be categories into compression, tension and torsion. SHPB testing is used to investigate the mechanical property of different material under high strain rate at compression, tension or torsion condition. Tensile SHPB test is to...

SHPB testing is used to investigate the mechanical property of different material under high strain rate at compression, tension or torsion condition. Tensile SHPB test is to investigate the response of dynamic stress and strain for different materials under high strain rate condition from 1000s-1 to 10000s-1. The theory is based on the longitudinal pressure wave propagation along the elastic stainless steel bars. Strain gauge is used in the experiment and its mounted on the input and output bar to detect the incidence, reflected and transmitted wave, which the raw data obtained from oscilloscope is then used for further process to obtain the stress, strain, strain rate response and compare with journal. The objectives for Tensile SHPB project is carry out empty run test, develop and improve the tension SHPB by using sheet AL6061-T6 specimen and compare the results obtained with journal results and compiling the “idiot guide” for sheet specimen, this include the measurement procedure, material chemical test procedure and the experiment procedure for sheet specimen. Lastly, the conclusion and recommendation to improve the accuracy of the results will be discussed.
