Summary: | Kramer introduced the idea that the dolphin’s skin is responsible for its fast speed and its capability of sustaining it. Many others have tried to verify his theory, but there were no convincing conclusions. Dickinson came up with the theory of matching the turbulence impedance with the coating impedance in attempt to design a drag reduction material. In recent years, Li and Yang designed a coating and achieved significant findings as well.
This project aims to modify the previous findings done by prior FYP students. The key objective is to find the ideal coating material to reduce the drag turbulences. A similar material in terms of modulus elastic to Gaster’s was experimented upon. The new coated material is being put to test and compared with the previous material for signs of drag reduction.
Different tests are conducted during the project. A tensile test is conducted on the both new coating and the previous coating for confirmation of the elastic modulus. Verification test is also done on the pressure transducer to ensure its functionality. Pressure coefficients are calculated for the test models to validate any signs of drag reduction.
The setup has to been revised to obtain a more precise measurement. However, more sophisticated test equipments and setup is required to determine the efficiency of the compliant coating. |
