Description
Summary:The trend of miniaturization has increases over the past decade due to increase in demand of micro parts in many industries. This has lead to micro-forming processes to be more prominently applied. However, basic research has shown that conventional metal forming knowledge cannot be applied to micro-forming processes due to the size effect. This final year project was carried out to study the effects of elastic tool deflection on the dimensions on the manufactures micro-formed parts. Methodology for studying this was proposed and the analysis was carried out using the computing tool, ABAQUS/STANDARD. Several factors such as final dimensions and reaction forces were studied to determine and assess whether elastic tool deflection does affect micro-forming processes. Simulation assessment has led to the conclusion that elastic tool deflection does affect the final dimensions to a certain extent. Conclusion and recommendations were also put forth.
