Summary: | The finite-element method large-eddy simulation (FEM LES) model developed in Li (2009) was adapted to study the flow structure through a cross-junction urban landscape. A mean flow was induced along the x-direction by a domain ceiling boundary condition, and turbulence was induced in the domain with a short period of thermal induced buoyancy. An asymmetrical flow field and Reynolds stress field was found to have developed under symmetrical boundary conditions, supporting the observations noted in Scaperdas (1999). Explanations put forth to explain this development will be validated by future results.
A correlation between uw Reynolds stress and w-velocity was observed from upstream, midstream and downstream plots in the y-z plane. A strong vw Reynolds stress in the x-z plane was noted in the free-stream region, and may be correlated to the v-velocity or w-velocity gradients. Salient structures observed in the distribution of Reynolds stress in the domain are highlighted. |
