Summary: | Global system for mobile communication (GSM) is a globally accepted standard for digital cellular communication. It is currently the most popular standard for mobile telephone systems in the world. It is used by more than 3 billion people in more than 212 countries and territories. One of its advantages is that it offers a much lower cost communication technique called Short Message Service (SMS) as compared with voice calls.
This report discusses a remote control system based on GSM to monitor the working status of a machine. The main objective of the project is to send an alerting SMS message to a mobile phone terminal if the machine is detected working in an abnormal state.
The whole project can be divided into three main parts: data acquisition unit, data processing unit and data transmission unit. The data acquisition unit comprises a Hall Effect sensor and the machine to be monitored. The sensor is used to detect the status of the working machine. The main component of the data processing unit is an ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) board which is used to process the signal output from the sensor. The data transmission unit contains a GSM modem and a mobile phone. It is adopted to send a warning SMS to the mobile terminal if the signal obtained from the data processing unit is not within the right working region of the machine.
The methodology adopted in this project is proven to be functional. Instructions are given to tell the user how to use the system. Besides, some limitations and improvements for the system are also discussed in this report. |
