Unlike other energy such as wind, water or sun, lightning energy in today context can still never be use or stored. With the technology advancement, clean energy is growing in the industry. The wind, water and sun energy can be converted into useful energy from wind turbine, hydro turbine or solar cells respectively. The lightning energy contained in a lightning stroke is too high and usually extremely destructive. These forces of great magnitude current are unleashed and are normally unpredictable with regards to its location of discharge and its exact discharge current magnitude. A direct lightning strike to building or structure can cause massive damage and it is fatal to human beings. Indirect lightning strike will also damage to sensitive equipment in the building. Replacement of such highly sensitive equipment can sometimes be very costly. Therefore preventive measure such as lightning protection system or lightning surge protectors are recommended to minimize the damage impact according to the few different standards and code of practice on lightning protection system. Lightning induce strike has been one of the major factors that lead to failure of electrical power system. The electric distribution networks are particularly vulnerable to lightning strokes. A single stroke to a distribution line can be sufficient to cause a blackout throughout a feeder, thus in order to prevent power failure, systems are protected with lightning rods, ground wires and surge arresters. This project purpose is to study and analysis the effect of lightning and surge arrester in power distribution system where lightning protection system maintenance is of great importance. Lightning surge is model using equation and will be use to analyze its effect to system. When fast front transients, such as lightning are to be investigated, the MOV surge arrester behavior representation is significantly different as fast front surge arrester is designed because it has dynamic characteristics that are significant for overvoltage coordination studies involving fast front surges.
