This dissertation presents a combination of both location-based servIce and tagging concepts to dining services. The objective is to develop a Java-based location-based application on dining services with tagging capabilities for non Windows Mobile and non pointer-based phones equipped with only numeric keypad and navigation keys. Most location-based applications are created for phones with pointers, and thus the user interface design and the interaction behaviour with the application is different from nonpointer based phones. With the limitations of the non-pointer based phones, we aim to develop a location-based application which fulfills the required functionalities without sacrificing the aesthetic features of good user interface. We adopted several HCI guidelines for small screen devices to the application to improve the intuitiveness when using the application. This helps to overcome the shortcomings of non-pointer based phones on location-based applications. The architecture of this location-based application is designed to address both the user interface and the hardware limitations of the target phone type. A small evaluation was conducted on this location-based application to assess its usability as well as gather feedback. This will help us to refine the user interface and improve the functionalities in future.
