Summary: | Knowledge Management (KM) comprises a range of practices used by organizations to identify, create, represent, and distribute knowledge. It provides the processes and
structures to create, capture, analyze, and act on information. KM is mainly about how
to bring maximum returns to an organization by capitalizing on the human aspect in an
organization. Companies have realized importance of KM technologies because of
fast-paced nature of work in a globalized environment. In particular, Information and
Communication Technology (ICT), is likely to play an important role to support KM initiatives in organizations. The SECI Model (Nonaka, 1994) which is framework for knowledge management can be considered one of the early works in KM. It stands for the four stages of KM i.e. 'socialization', 'externalization', 'combination', 'internalization'. Rice & Rice (2005) found that elements of the SECI Model support innovation and product development in
organizations. Fehrer (2006) agreed that the SECI Model is a suitable framework for reasons like its comprehensiveness, and the way it treats various types of knowledge as
it moves from person to person/s. SECI Model elaborates the process view Roy et al (2007), which is applicable to the global financial services and IT industry where
processes and knowledge transfer are of importance especially in a multi-geographical
organizational environment. They also posit that it is the most advanced model for
knowledge management. |
