In nearly half a century, Yishu has never stopped writing; her work has remained popular over the decades, attracting readers not only from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan, but also from overseas Chinese communities. Hong Kong’s flourishing popular culture has provided a stage on which Yishu could shine. The novel themes of her writing in due time have made her a phenomenon. Since the waning of the 1970’s, Yishu has deliberately forged a new generation of female icons, the creation of which has distinguished her from past and contemporaneous romantic novelists. The female characters of her creation are not only both current and relevant, they are also imbued with strong personalities and advocate female independence, thus reflecting a realistic range of women struggling for self-respect and independence throughout various periods of Hong Kong’s variegated history. Past studies of Yishu’s work have focused primarily on the feminism that reverberates throughout her novels, but such studies rarely focus on the influence of Hong Kong’s unique cultural atmosphere at the time of Yishu’s writing. This thesis will examine Yishu’s feminist writings, framed and partly formed by Hong Kong’s popular culture.
