Description
Summary:Really Simple Syndication (RSS) and Atom consists of web feed formats that are used to publish frequently updated works such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video in a standardised format. It has enabled publishers to syndicate their content automatically with the latest information in a summarise form. Users who are interested in certain content are required to subscribe to a publisher feed to get the latest information. 10x10 is an example of an online RSS/Atom Reader. It harnesses the latest news events every hour from various news publishers and the news events are displayed in the form of a pictorial representation. 100 news events will be displayed in a 10 by 10 grid for the users to explore. Each picture in the grid contains a representative keyword that is displayed in a list. However, the current layout does not indicate the degree of importance of each news event in the current hour and very often it leaves to the users to determine what is important to them. Repeated news events are scattered across the grid which make it difficult for the users to determine which news events have been read or unread. The group of news events under each picture in the 10x10 do not reflect clearly the similarity between them. In this project, the author will investigate on the different types of clustering techniques to group similar news events that are based on their news contents, finding the most representative cluster labels and how the clusters are presented to address the various issues that can improve the experience in exploring news using pictorial representation.
