The East Asian crisis provides a good platform to rethink the factors that make the region's countries successful in the past. Macro economic indicators were unable to predict the susceptibility of East Asian economies to shocks. Both the "statist" and "open" models have in some sense failed to explain the unique circumstances of each country. This research offers an alternative perspective by considering the attributes of business entities to represent the consequences of various forces within these political economies. We compare these attributes to see how they provide competitive advantage for the countries, and examine if they fall along any ideological lines. Our study covers the top businesses of 9 East Asian countries and the US.
