Description
Summary:The widespread usage and deployment of the Internet coupled with advancement in hardware technology has made Internet an attractive alternative to traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) for providing real-time audio/video communication services. Internet not only enables low cost long distance telephony, it also allows real-time data sharing and video communication to be possible. However, Internet is highly unreliable and its basic communication protocol suit (TCP/IP) is not sufficient for supporting real-time services. The use of additional mechanisms like real-time protocol, compression, rate and error control and concealment are required to support real-time audio/video services over Internet.
