Summary:THE FIRST DAY of 1999 will herald the convergence of the European Union's (EU) 15 member countries towards fuller economic integration marked by the impending launch of the single currency. Despite the divergence in views which leaves the European Monetary Union (EMU), or the new euro-zone1 with just 11 founding members, its reality is imminent. The multiplier effect is expected to eventually fulfil the dream of EMU membership enlargement to over 20 countries.
