Summary: | Optical fibers, besides its primary use in information technology, can be also used as sensors as well as transmitters of the sensors' signals to monitor parameters such as strain, temperature, pressure and displacement. An attempt to integrate fiber optics with advanced composite materials is emerging as a sub-discipline of fiber optic sensors. By embedding optical fiber sensors in composite material, important design information can be obtained that is not readily available through modelling or conventional testing methodologies. |
