Summary:The aim of this study is to identify the information needs of account officers with a view of determining the requirements for an appropriate records management system. The study aims to identify the aspects of a records management system through consultation with internal staff and also external consultants. A literature review was carried out with the objective to broaden the scope on the setting up, managing and evaluating a records management system in financial institutions. A survey method was used to solicit input from the account officers. Through these surveys, the information needs of the account officers was laid out in greater depth. In addition to the survey, a meeting with a consultant on the proposed set-up was arranged to gain insight of the records management process from an expert's point of view. The findings from the survey and the consultation concluded that account officers see a need to organise documents in a systematic manner to enable more efficient document retrieval. The study concluded with a the write-up of a business plan and the suggestion that a further study to be conducted in the area of electronic document management system and the option of off-site storage for archival of documents.
