Originally established as part of Nanyang Girls‘ School, it was renamed Nanyang Girls‘ High Affiliated Primary School before assuming its present name, Nanyang Primary School. Nanyang Primary School was initially a traditional Chinese School started up by the Chinese community before it was registered as a government-aided school in 1978. It was conferred to be one out of four SAP schools in 1984—which saw bilingualism of paramount importance. However, efforts in promoting the Chinese culture did not cease after it became a SAP school. In fact, Nanyang Primary School continues to offer its student body an array of Chinese culture-related activities up to this day. Activities such as festive celebrations, immersion programmes and cultural activities are conducted with the aims of raising awareness and proliferating knowledge of the Chinese culture amongst the students. The following thesishighlights the landscape changes and progress of Singapore‘s education system, including the establishment of SAP schools in its introductory chapter.
