In simple terms, it is a system that merges cartography, statistical analysis and database technology. There are many areas where GIS may be used. To name a few, GIS may be used in areas of archaeology, land surveying, urban planning and localised search engine. The focus of this report will be placed on the area of localised search engine where the GIS are most commonly utilised. The localised search engine allows user to submit geographically constrained searches against a structured database of local business listings. A typical local search includes not only information about “what” the user is searching for but also provides “where” information such as a street address name, city name, or geographical coordinates.
