| Summary: | Cheerleading has always been seen as a feminine activity, due to its portrayal in the media. At the same time, there are many males who participate in cheerleading during their tertiary education years. In a qualitative study of twelve NTU Hall male cheerleaders, this research seeks to understand the dynamics of males negotiating their masculinity during their participation of cheerleading. It looks at the various ways in which male cheerleaders redefine the nature of cheerleading and the performance of “masculine” actions in their attempt to negotiate their masculinity. By understanding this dynamics, it allows for better understanding of the issues of gender, identity and sports. |
