Summary: | The development of the existing Television standards was based on the limitations of Human vision that can resolve a luminance bandwidth of approximately 7MHz and half of this (3.54MHz) for Chrominance. For the normal perception of a reasonable good picture in the receiver, this bandwidth can be considered as sufficient. However, when the transmitted pictures have transients in their contents, the bandwidth needed is higher than the actual contents of the signal itself. This can be easily demonstrated with test patterns like a color bar or patterns with edge transitions. This problem can also be easily demonstrated with real life image contents where there are transients between adjacent colors or gray bars with varying luminance levels and color transients. Many new improvement techniques have been proposed and implemented by some companies to overcome this limitation. |
