Essentially, the authors bring forth the notion of women's sealed fate as being submissive individuals who will forever be incarcerated and banished into the world of subservience. While Tiempo and Polotan seem to resign their fates and acknowledge their inferior position in society, Jessica Hagedorn on the other hand, questions the very notion of the patriarchal system. While Hagedorn paints a realistic picture of the situation in the Philippines, presenting women's unavoidable predicament, however, she differs in the way that she undermines the system, questions the constructs of sexuality and gender and as such, attempts to subvert conventions. In addition, Hagedorn questions the categories that are responsible for the constructs and by doing so, her challenge can thus be viewed upon as her, rewriting history. As such, this thesis seeks to explore the gradual change in the representations of women as well as to study the shift in perspective of women in the 20th century through a juxtaposition of authors and their texts.
